On Friday, September 10, 2010, the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber will celebrate the 11th annual HobNob in the Valley. The event brings together the general public, area business people, elected officials and candidates listed on the November ballot in a casual, multi-partisan gathering that celebrates the American electoral process.
This event gives everyone the opportunity to mix politics and pleasure allowing the exchange of information on issues and legislation while facilitating the building of relationships with political officials and guests.
There are also two opportunities for participants to express their views. A Straw Poll mirrors the November ballot, listing all the congressional candidates and local races. Processed electronically, the straw poll “takes the local pulse”, reflecting the views of those in attendance.
Federal, State and local candidates on the November ballot will be permitted to provide a short speech identifying key issues each supports. Candidates will have the opportunity to be interviewed by news reporters from TV3 Winchester and several radio stations as well as print media.
Invitations have also been extended to elected and appointed officials such as Governor Bob McDonnell, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, Senators John Warner and Jim Webb, and elected regional representatives of City and County governments. So far, the Chamber has confirmation from several federal and state level officials and candidates. All three candidates for the Virginia House of Representatives 10th District seat will be represented. Congressman Frank Wolfe and his Democratic opponent Jeff Barnett will be in attendance. The Libertarian candidate Bill Redpath will not be able to attend but will have strong representation at the event. Senator Jill Vogel and Delegate Beverly Sherwood have also stated their intention to be present.
The event runs from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 per person and may be purchased online at www.regionalchamber.biz or by calling the chamber office at 540-662-4118. Tickets are also available at various Handy Mart stores in Winchester. Ticket costs include a barbeque dinner, beverage of choice and one vote in the straw poll. The event is held outdoors at Shenandoah University’s Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy, 1775 N. Sector Court, Winchester, Virginia. The location is on the campus of Winchester Medical Center, easily accessible from the Route 37 By-Pass.
The Chamber is pleased to have the sponsorship support of Annandale Millwork & Allied Systems, Phillip S. Griffin, II, PC, Clear Channel Communications, and The River 95.3, and the support of H.N. Funkhouser and Handy Mart stores.
The Top of Virginia Regional Chamber serves about 900 members, representing over 35,000 area employees. Its mission is to create diverse, innovative partnerships and opportunities for its members and the community.

AT&T* said today that the timetable for expanding AT&T service in Virginia has been accelerated and that it expects to complete network upgrades on wireless assets acquired from Verizon Wireless in June 2010 by the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011. That is significantly sooner than the earlier estimate for enhancing AT&T’s coverage in Virginia by mid-2011. Once network integration work is completed, AT&T will launch service for Alltel customers in areas of Danville, Norton and South Hill and Virginia Rural Service Areas (RSA) 1 and 8.(1)

Every residential Alltel customer in these areas joining AT&T as a result of the transaction will receive an offer for a brand new AT&T handset at no additional cost.(2) Customers will be able to choose their free device from a list of the latest AT&T 3G handsets that are comparable to what they have today.(3) Additionally, the vast majority of customers choosing free comparable devices will be able to keep their existing rate plans, and none of these customers will be required to assume an additional contract term.

Customers will also have the opportunity to upgrade to a new device, like iPhone 4®, for an additional fee and with a new two-year contract, with current AT&T rates and associated data plan.

“AT&T has been working tirelessly to upgrade the Alltel network to the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network, and we expect that coverage in these areas will be as good as — if not better than — it is today, with the ability to talk and surf the Internet at the same time,” said Erika K. Thompson-Kemp, vice president and general manager for AT&T in Virginia and West Virginia. “Our preparations will ensure that we deliver a superior customer experience when we launch service, and we look forward to expanding our presence in Virginia.”

“AT&T customers have access to the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network. And not only does AT&T’s network cover 97 percent of all Americans, AT&T also has the best international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider. That means our customers have voice service in more than 220 countries and data service in 200 countries.”

AT&T representatives will communicate to new customers on a regular basis about any changes they can expect moving forward. For example, in the coming weeks, AT&T will send customers a letter describing the steps for choosing new devices. New devices will be mailed directly to AT&T customers’ billing addresses approximately one to three weeks before service is launched in these areas.

AT&T is an industry leader in delivering the benefits of mobile broadband networks, devices and applications. With the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds and simultaneous voice and data capabilities for an amazing wireless voice and data experience.

A new media marketing world increasingly dominated by mobile technologies, “shopping bots,” recommendation systems and peer-to-peer networks has spawned a radical new online marketplace, challenging the old behaviors of buyers and sellers, according to a new report in the Journal of Service Research.

The old straight line that governed customer relationship management has been replaced by a zig-zagging pathway that more closely resembles a game of pinball – with risks and rewards waiting for companies that wade into the online marketplace, according to an international team of researchers in the journal’s latest edition.

“Making use of these opportunities and avoiding their respective dangers requires a thorough understanding of why consumers are attracted to new media and how they influence consumers’ attitudes and behaviors,” the authors write. “New strategic and tactical marketing approaches must match the characteristics of new media and their effects on customers.”

Social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube, Google and Twitter give customers a bigger role as market players capable of reaching and being reached by almost everyone, anywhere and anytime, according to the authors. Armed with the tools of the Internet, consumers serve as retailers on eBay, producers on YouTube, authors on Wikipedia and critics on Amazon.com.

Further challenging companies in a fast-changing landscape, a personal computer is no longer the base from which customers make decisions. Instead, smart phones, laptops and far-reaching personal portals like Twitter and Facebook have made real-time information exchange an integral element of consumer behavior without restriction to time of day or location.

While these new media are displacing long-established business models and corporate strategies, they also provide new and exciting opportunities for companies to improve customer relationships and expand businesses through strategies that adapt to this constantly changing new media era, according to the international team of authors, which included Thorsten Hennig-Thurau, Bauhaus University of Weimar, Edward C. Malthouse, Northwestern University, Christian Friege, of LichtBlick AG, Sonja Gensler, University of Groningen, Lara Lobschat, University of Cologne, Arvind Rangaswamy, Pennsylvania State University and Bernd Skiera, Gothe University Frankfurt.

The Company generated a net loss of ($3,418,000) or ($0.24) per diluted share during the first quarter of fiscal year 2011, compared with a net loss of ($6,406,000) or ($0.45) per diluted share in the first quarter of its prior fiscal year. The Company’s results in the first quarter of the prior year included $1,596,000 of net-of-tax restructuring charges relating to cost reduction initiatives completed during the prior year. Exclusive of these charges, net loss for the first quarter of the prior fiscal year was ($4,810,000) or ($0.34) per diluted share.

Gross profit for the first quarter of fiscal year 2011 was 13.2% of net sales, compared with 11.7% in the first quarter of the prior fiscal year. The improvement in gross profit margin reflected the beneficial impact of increased sales volume on direct labor and manufacturing overhead costs, as well as savings realized from the completed cost reduction initiatives. These beneficial factors were partially offset by the unfavorable impact of rising material and fuel costs.

Selling, general and administrative costs were 18.2% of net sales in the first quarter of fiscal year 2011, down from 19.4% of net sales in the first quarter of the prior fiscal year. The Company’s operating expense ratio decreased due primarily to a reduction in general and administrative expenses.

The Company generated free cash flow of negative $0.3 million (defined as cash provided by operating activities net of cash used for investing activities) in the first quarter of fiscal year 2011, compared with negative free cash flow generated in the first quarter of the prior fiscal year of $9.1 million. The improvement in free cash flow compared with prior year was driven primarily by the reduction in net loss and the absence of payments made in the prior year related to cost reduction initiatives.

The Company ended the first quarter of fiscal year 2011 with cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash of $66.2 million and a debt-to-capital ratio of 12.9%.

American Woodmark Corporation manufactures and distributes kitchen cabinets and vanities for the remodeling and new home construction markets. Its products are sold on a national basis directly to home centers, major builders and through a network of independent distributors. The Company presently operates eleven manufacturing facilities and nine service centers across the country.

On Thursday, September 2, 2010, the Leesburg Town Council, Leesburg Airport Commission and Town staff will celebrate the completion of new aircraft hangars on the South Apron at the Leesburg Executive Airport. At 6:00 p.m., prior to the Leesburg Airport Commission’s regular monthly meeting, Town officials will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the hangars.
“Continued growth of airport capabilities is a major goal for the Town” said Dennis Boykin, Chairman of the Leesburg Executive Airport Commission. “Airports are about commerce, not about airplanes, and we need to continually strive to add facilities in order support economic development. As an important part of our transportation infrastructure, the Airport needs to stay ahead of demand. Adding additional hangars brings additional businesses, and with that, additional economic development.”

The South Apron Hangar project includes ten new T-hangars and six new executive aircraft hangars. These hangars replace T-hangars that were damaged in a snowstorm in 2002 and demolished. With the completion of these hangars, the Leesburg Executive Airport now has 46 T-hangars and 11 executive aircraft hangars.

“When the Town updated the Airport Master Plan in 2006, we identified the need for more hangar space,” explained Tim Deike, Airport Director. “The demand has been constant for aircraft hangars. Currently, we have 32 people waiting for T-hangar space and 30 people on the waiting list for tie-downs. By increasing our based aircraft population through leasing tie-downs and hangars, the Airport becomes more financially sustainable.”

Construction of the South Apron Hangars began in April 2009 and the hangars were completed in August 2010. The total project cost was $2.8 million. The Town of Leesburg received $929,568 in funding from the Virginia Department of Aviation for the project site work which included taxiways, drainage improvements and fencing.

The hangar project is Phase Two of the airport’s overall plan for the development of the South Apron. Complete in Spring 2009, Phase One expanded the South Apron by two acres and created an additional 31 paved aircraft tie-down spaces. Phase Three will expand the paved aircraft parking area again, providing additional aircraft tie-down spaces, and will relocate the existing fuel farm. Phase Three is scheduled to begin construction in Spring 2014.

In 2006, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) partnered with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to establish the Wounded Veterans Internship Program, an initiative to assist veterans with the transition from military to full-time civilian employment. The program focuses on, but is not limited to, disabled veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq who may have lost their job or are no longer physically or emotionally suited for the same work.

VDOT was the first transportation department in the nation to create such a program, and has served as a model for other states across the country.

VDOT works with a number of veteran service organizations to implement the program, which attempts to locate internships near the participant’s home and rehabilitation facility. Internship placement depends on aptitudes and interests, and could be in areas such as planning, finance, project management, security, procurement, quality control, information systems, engineering, civil rights and human resources.

“The program has been very successful in providing transitions for wounded veterans seeking to return to the workforce,” said Freddie Jones, Civil Rights Division Administrator. “The internships are for one year but may be longer depending on the developmental needs of the veterans. The goal is to allow veterans to revamp old job skills or develop new ones.”

Veterans receive a stipend and opportunities to compete for full-time positions at VDOT, as well as introductions to private sector and other government agency jobs.

Paul Galanti, Commissioner of Veterans Affairs in the Commonwealth, added, “I am confident that with programs like this, and the support and leadership from Governor McDonnell, Virginia will soon be the most veteran-friendly state in America. The Wounded Veterans Internship Program is a great way to help our brave warriors further develop their skills and knowledge that will aid them as they re-enter the workforce.”

For more information or to apply for the Wounded Veterans Internship Program, contact Freddie Jones, Civil Rights Division Administrator, at 804-786-4552 (TTY 711), visit VDOT’s website at www.virginiadot.org/jobs/WoundedVetProgram.asp, or send an e-mail to WVPinternship@VDOT.virginia.gov.

At 6 pm on Friday, August 20, 2010, Town of Leesburg officials will hold a ribbon cutting for Imáge Salon & Boutique, located at 106 Loudoun Street SW in Historic Downtown Leesburg. Vice Mayor Kevin Wright will be officiating.

Owner Lisa Hall is excited to bring her 25 years of experience in the beauty business to Leesburg with the opening of Imáge Salon & Boutique. The former owner of a Manassas, VA salon for 15 years, Ms. Hall has been trained by some of the world’s best hair cutters, colorists and stylists in “French cutting techniques” that focus on the head shape so each cut is unique to the client. This attention to detail does not end with the cut. Imáge Salon & Boutique also offers the best all-natural hair and skincare products.

“I help clients with total body image makeovers,” said Hall, “This is a head-to-toe process. We start with hair, skin care, and make-up; then take it to the next level.
